Sensation Review:  Birthday Cake Capacitor

Sensations sound, well, sensational, but what are they really like? Here’s one perspective that might help make your decision a little easier.

Our feature this week is Birthday Cake Capacitor  : Cake Batter and Fudge Ice Cream, Cookie Dough, and Sprinkles.

I’ll preface that I made this one for myself and I’m still a novice at making Sub Zero ice cream, so I’ll update it when I try it again with a more skilled Sub Zero spinner making it. I gotta give those guys credit for their nitrogen spinning skills!

I’ll just say it right out, I made it too fudge-y, so it’s not my favorite. I can’t taste the cake batter enough, and that’s what I was really excited about. I would probably make the fudge a topping/swirl. The cool thing about Sub Zero is that they can totally do that. I do like the sprinkles, it’s a nice texture without a distracting flavor. Cookie dough is such a classic mix in, you can’t go wrong there. Think of it as a fancier Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough kind of taste.

Though the cake batter was overwhelmed by the fudge, I can still taste it in there. It’s still good, just more brownie batter than cake batter. If I had been expecting it as brownie batter, I might really love it. Sometimes expectation is half the battle. If you wanted to play with the brownie batter style, I might add brownie bits instead of sprinkles or go a little fancier with the contrast of cheesecake bites for a complementary mix-in.

Once I try it again with the correct amount of fudge, I’ll let you know if I recommend it as is, or if I would perhaps change it to Nutella, or something else for the chocolate fix.

Bottom line: Make the fudge a topping rather than mixing it in and it’s a winner. If you don’t like sprinkles, try chocolate bits, brownie bits, or cheesecake bits as good substitutes.
