Nitrogen Safety Facts

Sub Zero Ice Cream is both Safe and delicious!

Knowledge is power. Here are some facts:

•What is Nitrogen?

Nitrogen is a gas that makes up 78% of our air! Nitrogen’s boiling point is -320º F, so liquid nitrogen is VERY cold.

•Is Liquid Nitrogen safe?

Yes, with proper handling.

•Does Sub Zero Nitrogen Ice Cream handle liquid nitrogen properly?

YES! All of our franchisees and their employees have been trained in the proper procedures and processes for handling liquid nitrogen. Our stores are built and designed with processes in place to ensure safety for customers and employees alike.

•Is liquid nitrogen safe to eat?

NO! Never ingest liquid nitrogen.

•Am I eating liquid nitrogen when I eat Sub Zero ice cream?

NO! All liquid nitrogen used to freeze ice cream at Sub Zero has evaporated by the time it is presented to the customer for eating.

None remains, as shown here:

•Is liquid nitrogen used in other common products we eat?

Yes! Liquid Nitrogen is commonly used to flash freeze products found in the frozen aisles of grocery stores (e.g., meat, seafood, pastries, fruit, frozen meals, etc.).

•What about Nitro Breath?

The food and equipment used, and procedures Sub Zero follows, to prepare Nitro Breath (aka “dragon’s breath”) ensure that no residual liquid nitrogen remains when it is served. The reason it causes you to breath out fog is that the balls are so cold that the water vapor you exhale condenses into tiny droplets. It’s no different from when you see your breath on a cold day. As with any food item of extreme temperature, like hot coffee or freshly made French fries, use care when placing in your mouth.

•Can nitro breath cause asthma attacks?

Very unlikely. Nitrogen and water are non- toxic. Due to the very cold temperature, Nitro Breath may not be suitable for young children, or those whose asthma is triggered by inhaling very cold air.

•Is nitrogen ice cream safe across all brands?

We can’t vouch for other brands that make nitrogen ice cream and variations of dragon’s breath, but all Sub Zero locations follow the safety protocols that ensure that everyone is safe, and that the products we serve are the fun,
top-quality, awesome products that customers return for again and again!
